Diss & District Table Tennis League

Closed Championships 2012

Diss & District Table Tennis League – Closed Championships Sunday 11th March 2012.

The Diss and District Table Tennis League Championships took place at Hartismere High School, Eye and was well attended with 33 people taking part after 3 late withdrawals, in a total of 10 different events.

This for my money was one of the best Championships that the league has held in recent years, being very well attended by the best players.

A big thank you to all who arrived early to help set up the venue and those who stayed late to clear away.

It was James Skilleter who organised the matches and the format for the day. He should be congratulated for producing a highly efficient schedule that ran like clockwork with all the finals being played within the time limits on the day. Thanks James.

From the feedback that I have received so far, everyone taking part appeared to have a great day and I have heard no complaints!

Detailed below are the results of the various events showing winners and runners up.

Open Singles – Winner  John Monk. Runner up Stuart Gibb.

With a good entry totalling 20 players, this seeded event eventually produced the final of the day.

After the preliminary rounds the quarter finals were reached, producing matches between

Stuart Gibb  v  Kevin Gray

Resulting in a win for Stuart Gibb  11 – 7 , 11 – 2 & 11 – 3.

Steve Pendle  v  Jason Evans

Resulting in a win for Jason Evans 11 – 7, 8 – 11, 11 – 7 & 11 – 6.

John Monk  v  Frances Webb

Resulting in a win for John Monk  11 – 8, 11 – 4, 9 – 11 & 11 – 8

Dan Gigli  v  Ian Brown

Resulting in a win for Dan Gigli  5 – 11, 11 – 7, 11 – 8 & 11 – 5

Semi Final

Jason Evans  v  John Monk

John ran out the winner after a close match 15 – 13, 11 – 7 & 11 – 8

Stuart Gibb  v  Dan Gigli

Stuart came out on top  beating Dan 11 – 7, 11 – 3 & 11 – 4.

John Monk v  Stuart Gibb

This was certainly one of the best finals ever to grace the D & DTTL Championships.
It went to 5 sets with John Monk winning the first 2 sets 11 – 7 and 11 – 6. Stuart Gibb came back taking the next two sets 11 – 7 and 11 - 9. John came out on top in the fifth set to win 11 – 8. The whole match was peppered with incredible rallies and fantastic shots from both players. The quality of Table Tennis was of a very high standard as you would expect from these two players.

Handicap Singles winner Francis Webb.Runner up Kevin Gray

In the semi finals Francis Webb overcame Steve Griffee and Kevin Gray beat Paul Mortlock setting up a semi final between Francis and Kevin.

Francis had the handicap advantage with a 6 point start. He won the first set 25 -20 and then went on to win the second set 25 – 19. A hard fought match by both players but with Francis maintaining his points advantage to the end.

Open Doubles winners James Skilleter/Ian Brown.Runner up Francis Webb/Steve Pendle.

The semi final match between John Monk / Trevor Cottee  v  Francis Webb / Steve Pendle produced and emphatic win for Francis and Steve.

The semi final between James Skilleter / Ian Brown v Stuart Langridge/Kevin Gray was a much tighter affair with Skilleter/Brown winning 12 – 10 in the fifth set.

The final produced a good match with the Skilleter/ Brown combination overcoming Webb / Pendle in three straight sets 11 – 5, 11 – 9 & 11 – 8.

Division One Singles winner Kit Marsden.Runner up David Leeder

A slightly disappointing turnout for the first division events did not distract from some good quality games.

The semi finals produced a good win from Kit Marsden over his team mate John Williams in 4 sets with Kit winning 13 – 11, 11 – 7, 7 – 11 & 11 – 4.

The other semi final saw David Leeder overcome  Peter Evans 11 – 8, 13 – 11 & 11 – 6.

The final between Kit  and David was a close match going to five sets with Kit running out the the winner. 11 – 5, 9 – 11, 5 – 11, 11 – 4 & 11 – 7.

Division One Doubles winner John Williams/Kit Marsden.Runners up Phil Taylor/Tim Clarke.

Only 4 doubles pairs entered this event but there were some close encounters. However the winning pair were unbeaten on the day and deserved their victory.

Under 14 singles winner Richard Chenery-Woods. Runner up Nathaniel Strange.

A special mention here for Oliver Goodwin-Tallents who was third in this event but who took Nathaniel to five sets before losing 6 – 11 in the fifth set and who also took Richard to 4 sets before losing out 5 – 11 in the fourth set.

In the deciding match Richard over came Nathaniel 12 – 10, 11 – 7 & 11 – 4 to become a worthy champion.

Over 18 / under 40 singles winner Jason Evans. Runner up James Skilleter.

After coming through a tight semi final against Dan Gigli, which Jason won in the fifth set 11 – 7. Jason went on to take this quality final against James in three straight sets. 11 – 7, 13 – 11 & 11 – 8.

Over 40’s singles winner John Monk runner up Steve Pendle.

Steve Pendle after an exhausting encounter in the semi final against Kevin Gray, which Steve won 18 – 20, 11 – 8, 11 – 9, 13 – 15 & 11 – 9 in the fifth set, found John Monk too strong. John had beaten Trevor Cottee in 4 relatively untroubled sets although Trevor had taken 1 set 11 – 9.

John Monk came out on top 11 – 6, 11 – 8 & 11 – 7 for his second title of the day.

Over 50’s singles winner Stuart Gibb. Runner up Francis Webb.

Stuart Gibb and Francis Webb had gotten to the final relatively untroubled.

The final showed some fight by Francis who played well but in the end was unable to overcome Stuart. Stuart won 11 – 9, 11 – 2, 9 – 11 & 11 – 3.

Over 60’s singles winner Stuart Langridge. Runner up Ian Brown.

This was a classic match of defence and attack, Ian with his well known defensive play and Stuart getting into his attacking game. This was a good game to watch with some stout defending.

Stuart, in the end, proved too good for Ian running out the winning 11 – 8, 11 – 6, 9 – 11 & 11 – 5.
