2013 Diss and District Table Tennis League Closed Championships

                       A summary of:

Diss and District Table Tennis League Championships 2013.

The League Championships took place on Sunday 7th April 2013 at Hartismere High School, Eye.

It was a disappointing turnout, especially from Division one players. However this didn’t distract from a day packed with excellent table tennis and a day when all involved had an opportunity to play plenty of matches.

The organisation and format of the event was carried out very successfully by James Skilleter.

The handicap singles kicked off the day at 9:30am in a straight knockout format with a total of 15 competitors. This competition is a guide as to how accurate the handicaps are! The result validated the handicappers. At the third round it was the semi final and it was 1 premier player and one first division player in each semi final.

The first semi final was David Leeder on a handicap of +14 against Steven Pendle on a handicap of -1. The overall start of 15 proved too much for Steve and David ran a clear winner, winning both sets to 25.

The second semi final was Kieran Brady on a handicap of +4 against Scott Boast on +19. This time the overall start of 15 was overcome by Kieran as he took the two sets to 25. Scott made him work hard but Kieran won the last set  25-24.

The final was a close affair with the hard hitting Kieran forcing David back into his strong defensive game. David won the first leg 25-23. In the second leg Kierans game proved too strong and Kieran ran out the winner 25-19 and became the Champion by virtue of the highest number of points scored.

Singles Handicap Champion Kieran Brady

The Open Singles comprised of 4 groups of 4 players.

In Group A there were a few surprises including the number 1 seed Chris Jones failing to qualify from the groups.

It was David Barnard causing the damage. He was in imperious form with his forehand and backhand loops landing accurately and powerfully. His potential was well and truly on display. He beat Ian Brown in 4 sets, beat Trevor Cottee in 4 sets and only just lost out to Chris Jones 11 – 9 in the fifth. However it was this result that stopped Chris getting to the straight knockout rounds, having previously lost to Ian Brown. It was two games each to David, Ian and Chris but on count back, lost games prevented Chris from going through.

In Group B Stuart Gibbs was untroubled in qualifying winning his three matches in 3 straight sets.

Steve Pendle qualified as the runner up, winning two of his games in 4 sets

In Group C John Monk won all his games in three sets with David Mortlock runner up. Scott Boast enjoyed the experience of playing some good players although he did not win any games.

In Group D it was Dan Gigli who won his 3 matches in 3 straight sets. Kieran Brady was runner up after beating Phil Mortlock and David Leeder .

In the quarter finals everything seemed to go to form. Ian Brown beat David Mortlock. Stuart Gibbs beat Kieran Brady. John Monk beat Steve Pendle and Dan Gigli beat David Barnard.

The first semi final was Ian Brown against Stuart Gibbs. What a marathon encounter this turned out to be. Stuart hitting and looping accurately and with speed and Ian in ultra defence mode returning what seemed impossible shots. The first set went to Stuart 13 – 11. The second leg ended in favour of Ian 22 – 20. Ian then went on to take the third  12 – 10 and winning the fourth 11 – 9, in doing so letting forth the loudest victory roar of the tournament and causing the next upset to the expected result.

The second semi final was Dan Gigli against reigning champion John Monk. It was a good match but John came out on top in three straight sets. 11 – 7, 11- 6, 11-8.

So that set up the final, John Monk against Ian Brown.

John was dominant in the final, putting on an aggressive attacking display and not giving Ian a chance to get into the game. John won 11 – 1, 11 – 4, 11 – 3.

Singles Finals Champion for second consecutive year: John Monk.

Division One singles. Only five entries from Division one. This resulted in a semi final between Scott Boast against David Leeder. Scott, playing his first year of league table tennis, has come on well. He beat David in four sets showing how well his smashing game has come on. The other semi final between Terry Doyle and Alan Worthington was quite close. Alan ran a three straight set winner.

The final turned out to be close match which Alan won in five set, 11 – 7.

Division One Singles Champion. Alan Worthington.

Over 18 under 40 ‘s singles. Just 2 groups of three in this category. Dan Gigli beat David Barnard in the first semi final and James Skilleter beat Kieran Brady.

A good final in which Dan Gigli won in the fifth set 11 – 6.

Over 18 under 40’s Champion: Dan Gigli

Over 40 singles. This was played in two groups with the winners and runners up going through to the semi finals.

The first semi final was Chris Jones against Stuart Gibbs. Stuart won in 3 straight sets in a great match to watch with some lovely table tennis.

The second semi final was a real battle with John Monk up against an inspired David Mortlock. David had John in real trouble with his unorthodox chopping style and his recently developed winning hits. It was 2 games all and John looked as though he was struggling. In the final set it was 9 – 9 and John was having to push himself hard to find a way through David. In the end John prevailed and won the fifth set 11 – 9. The match will certainly send warning signals to other players to watch out playing against Dave!!!

This set up a final between John Monk and Stuart Gibbs another classic. Some lovely table tennis from both players, fast and furious, delicate touches, great defence and great attack. What a classy final. John Monk coming out on top 11- 8 in the fifth set.

Over 40 singles Champion John Monk.

Over 60 singles. This started with 2 groups of 4 and ended with Ian Brown and John Bryant in one semi final and Alan Connelly and Terry Doyle in the second semi final. Ian beat John and Alan beat Terry. In the final Ian prevailed in 3 straight sets.

Over 60’s Singles Champion : Ian Brown.

Open Doubles. 8 pairings competed in this competition. Good experience for Scott Boast being paired with ex-England number 2, Stuart Gibbs.

The semi finals left David Barnard / Phil Mortlock against Trevor Cottee / John Monk and Dan Gigli / Steve Pendle against Chris Jones  / David Mortlock.

Cottee/Monk beat Barnard/Mortlock and Gigli/Pendle beat Jones/Mortlock.

Cottee and Monk proved too strong in the final beat Gigli/Pendle in three straight sets.

Open Doubles Champions: John Monk and Trevor Cottee.

First Division doubles. Only two pairings so a straight final between Alan Worthington / Terry Doyle against Scott Boast / Martin Lainsbury. This resulted in a straight three set win to Worthington / Doyle.

First Division Doubles Champions: Alan Worthington and Terry Doyle.

A great championship despite the lack entries from Division one.
